Drew Brees Admits He May Have Been ‘Overzealous’ About Playing Until He Is 45

After a rough 2014 season, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is rethinking a bold statement he made a year ago.

Before the season began, Brees was excited about the possibility of playing into his mid-40s—a statement he now admits was a bit “overzealous.”

Brees, now 36 years of age, took plenty of big hits last year and was sacked 29 times. Throughout his Hall-of-Fame career, the signal-caller has taken some brutal hits, including the infamous Ahmad Brooks sack that was overturned by penalty.

You know, the one that made his neck bend like a Gumby doll?

There is hardly any doubt that Brees still has some excellent years in his body, however.

Last year he passed for 4,952 yards with 33 touchdowns, completing 69.2 percent of his passes. His best years are behind him, but the gun-slinger can still drop dimes with the best of him.

Saints fans shouldn’t be too worried about an eminent retirement, but it’s clear Brees is rethinking this play-till-I’m-45 business.
