The Dallas Cowboys are setting themselves up to pay Tony Romo for the rest of his natural life.
According to numerous reports, the team plans to restructure Romo’s contract for what seems like a 10th time. This moves will likely save the Cowboys about $13 million against the cap in 2015. It will also create a total of over $32 million of dead money on his contract following this upcoming season. That’s a whole lot of dead money for a signal caller that’s going to be 35 later this month.
The move will enable Dallas to remain under the cap after re-signing surprising linebacker Rolando McClain earlier on Wednesday. With this restructure, Dallas will be about $15 million under the cap. Considering it will have to save about $5 million for the rookie draft class, there’s a nice chunk of change remaining to target a specific player—a player that currently sits on the Commissioner’s Exempt List and wants out of Minnesota.
It remains to be seen if this move is being made in anticipation of the Cowboys going after Adrian Peterson, but it will create a lot of buzz on that front. Restructuring a star player’s contract this far into the offseason is usually done with a specific move in mind. That’s important to note moving forward.
