DeMarco Murray Says Decision to Join Eagles was About Winning

DeMarco Murray signed his new contract Thursday with the Philadelphia Eagles. He agreed to a five-year, $42 million contract that will pay him an annual average of $8.4 million per year, including $21 million guaranteed.

It goes without saying that this contract is much more than the Cowboys offered Murray. It’s also an indication that Murray went where the money was.

According to Murray, the decision was about winning a Super Bowl, not gaining a huge payday (via Eagles official site).

I felt this was a great opportunity for me to win a Super Bowl at the end of the day. It wasn’t about financial security or anything like that. Obviously, you want something that you deserve and something that is respectful. I felt that those two things were important to me and I was able to accomplish that here.

It definitely wasn’t the biggest contract, but it was something about this organization, about this team, that caught my eye and I felt that there was a great chance to win here and that’s what you want. You want to be in a place that has great fans. You want to be in a place that has a great coach in Chip Kelly. You want to be in a place that has a chance to win and be successful.

So, Murray thinks he has a better chance at winning a Super Bowl in the near future with either Sam Bradford or Mark Sanchez leading the team instead of Tony Romo? That’s a pie in the sky justification right there.

This past season saw Dallas win 12 regular season games and the NFC East before being knocked out in the divisional playoffs by the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, Philadelphia missed out on the playoff altogether.

The NFL is a business, and obviously the players have to do what they feel is best for their career. However, Murray probably should have pulled an Ndamukong Suh here by saying it was about the money.
