Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden: Robert Griffin III to Open 2015 Season as Starter

So much for continued drama about the quarterback position in D.C. Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden indicated that the team will go into the 2015 season with Robert Griffin III as its starting quarterback.

Some expected the Redskins to move on from RGIII altogether following a disastrous 2014 campaign that saw the much-maligned quarterback throw just four touchdowns compared to six interceptions in nine games (seven starts). After suffering an early-season ankle injury, RGIII was sidelined for nearly two months. Once he did return, it wasn’t to much fanfare from either outside sources or within the Redskins locker room itself.

Reports surfaced throughout the season that RGIII was alienating teammates, and Gruden himself took to the media to question his quarterback’s performance on the field.

It was a drama that rivaled some of the best day-time soap operas around.

With RGIII firmly in the mix and expected to start next season under center, Gruden is hedging his bets that the former No. 2 overall pick will be healthy and ready perform at a higher level. He’s also likely been told from the powers to be in D.C, owner Daniel Snyder included, to run RGIII out there. Such is the dynamic of having to coach under a hands-on owner.
