The Tennessee Titans possess the second pick in the upcoming NFL draft, which makes choosing from top quarterback prospects Marcus Mariota and Jamesis Winston a distinct possibility.
However, this may not be the direction the Titans plan to go with their prized No. 2 pick. Speaking highly of second-year quarterback Zach Mettenberger, assumptions are that the team may select a quarterback in the draft appear to be surrounded by a bit of doubt. According to the Tennessean, Titans’ general manager Ruston Webster had this to say regarding Mettenberger and the upcoming scouting at the Combine.
We like Zach, and I think Zach has the tools to play and start in the league. We’ve said all along that this is a part of this process, and we have to do our due diligence all the way through. Zach knows we are going to do that, and this is just kind of part of it. These guys are part of the evaluation process along with other positions. And we’ll take a good look at them.
Despite losing all six games that he started and throwing just eight touchdowns, Mettenberger showed promise as a rookie. At 6’5″, the former LSU standout is also a prototypical pocket quarterback.
While 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker does not appear to be the team’s long-term solution at quarterback due to his injury-riddled history, Mettenberger could eventually be the answer. Being that he was a sixth-round acquisition by the Titans, there is no hefty price tag attached to Mettenberger either.
If the Titans do decide that they do not need to use their draft pick on a quarterback, what they do plan to do with the pick will remain to be seen.
With over two months to make some decisions or bold moves, the Titans definitely hold some good cards when it comes possessing that handy second pick.
