It’s going to be a continuing theme as student-athletes make it back on campus to prepare for fall sports amid the ongoing pandemic.

We’ve seen it throughout the country. Multiples of athletes on the same team testing positive for COVID-19. We can now add a big time college football program to the mix.

As Bruce Feldman from The Athletic notes, there’s currently 12 ongoing cases of the virus among Sooners football players. Two have recovered. There’s also two cases among the coaching staff.

This is in no way surprising. Students are returning from all over the country. That includes virus hot spots such as California, Texas, Arizona and Florida. The positive test rate among players of 12.6% is alarming.

Will the 2020 college football season start as planned?

The season is expected to kick off late next month. We have not heard much on this front since the spring.

Initial indications were that the season might be pushed back until next year. Athletic directors around the nation seem to be more confident that it will go on as planned.

But as more student-athletes test positive for coronavirus, the impact on this coming college football season can’t be ignored. That’s for sure.
