Report: Saints could trade starting safety Kenny Vaccaro

Kenny Vaccaro

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly discussing a potential trade involving safety Kenny Vaccaro, who’s started 56 games the past four-plus seasons.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, a “handful of teams” have engaged the Saints about a deal for Vaccaro and a “trade is possible.”

It’s hard to imagine the Saints would get a ton in return for Vaccaro. Even though he’s been a full-time starter in New Orleans the past four years and started in Week 1 this year, Vaccaro isn’t exactly a top-end safety in the NFL. He had a particularly poor outing in Week 1 as Sam Bradford shredded the Saints’ secondary to the tune of 346 yards and three touchdowns.

That said, Vaccaro has played at a high level at times and is a versatile defender. In his four previous seasons, he racked up 235 tackles, five interceptions, defended 22 passes, made six sacks and forced four fumbles.

If the Saints were indeed looking at moving Vaccaro as they attempt to rebuild their awful defense, then it would be a sure sign the team was looking to rebuild, rather than win now. Which, quite honestly, is the direction the franchise should be moving towards. As amazing as Drew Brees is behind center, the Saints have gone 7-9 the past three seasons for good reason.
