Bryce Petty: I’m the No. 1 QB for the Jets

The Jets' quarterback situation is laughable. Bryce Petty

New York Jets backup quarterback Bryce Petty is just that. He is No. 2 on the depth chart and the backup to starter Josh McCown, contrary to his own opinion.

Petty shared his thoughts about being the No. 2 guy.

“You never want second place. You understand it, but at the same time you have to go out there and every time try to be better than you were yesterday,” Petty said, via Lenn Robbins of ESPN. “So that’s been my mindset, really, since I came in.”

At least we can give him credit for preparing as if he was the No. 1 quarterback. Circumstances could force Petty into the starting position with little notice at any point this season.

For now, the Jets placed all of their eggs in McCown’s basket, no matter how sturdy it is. McCown opened up the season against the Buffalo Bills when he passed for 187 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

If head coach Todd Bowles has any plans of shaking things up and giving Petty a chance to start, he hasn’t tipped his hand.

Petty will serve as the No. 2 behind McCown when the Jets travel west to face the Oakland Raiders in Week 2.
