Las Vegas shooting took place outside hotel Cubs are staying in

News broke late Saturday morning of a shooting outside of the upscale Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. One person was killed and another was injured in the incident, which led to an hours-long standoff between the gunman and the police.

Interestingly enough, the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs were staying at the hotel in preparation for their game against the Cincinnati Reds at Cashman Field in Vegas.

Fortunately, the team bus departed before all heck broke look outside of the hotel. Everyone in the organization appears to be safe. That doesn’t mean this closer encounter didn’t rattle a few cages.

“I didn’t know what was going on until the guys showed up,” center fielder Albert Almora said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s pretty crazy.”

Starting pitcher Kyle Kendricks added

“I was going to try and hit the casino (Saturday night),” Hendricks said. “I might just lock up in my room tonight.”

Ultimately, the gunman surrendered to police after a standoff that lasted into the afternoon. As the Sun-Times report notes, the hotel is expected to be re-opened by the time the Cubs return from their game.
