Sam Bradford to sit out, Tim Tebow to get extensive work in Eagles preseason opener

Philadelphia Eagles fans waiting on pins and needles to see new quarterback Sam Bradford will need to wait one more week after the team announced he will not play on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Instead, Bradford will start behind center in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. This leaves the door wide open for Tim Tebow to see extended action.

The decision comes straight from head coach Chip Kelly, who understands Bradford’s desire to play, but who is also taking the long view in terms of his recovery.

“That’s my decision,” Kelly said (h/t Philadelphia Inquirer). “He really wants to play. I don’t think he’s really happy with my decision. I just felt he’s been out here for two weeks, done a really nice job. He’ll get his first work against the Ravens when we get a chance to train with them for a couple days before we play, and he’ll play in the Ravens game.”

By all accounts, Bradford’s return to action during training camp has been a resounding success following his recovery from an ACL injury suffered last season. Kelly has it in his mind that Week 2 and 3 offer Bradford the best opportunity to get good work in during the preseason.

Tebow will see the majority of the work on Sunday as a result, which should delight his faithful followers. Reports out of camp have also been favorable as it relates to Tebow’s development, particularly in the accuracy department, which is a far cry from his past camp experiences.

Kelly’s decision to keep Bradford sidelined in Week 1 is actually incredibly smart. He’s getting plenty of work in practice, and given the way we’ve already seen Niles Paul suffer a season-ending ankle injury, the Eagles are making the right decision to limit Bradford’s exposure to injury during meaningless scrimmages.
