WTA roundup: Xiyu Wang wins lengthy tiebreak in Budapest

China’s Xiyu Wang posted a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (10) win over Romania’s Ana Bogdan on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

The match lasted two hours and 45 minutes despite taking just two sets. Wang went ahead 6-4 in the second-set tiebreak, but Bogdan proceeded to save three match points on her way to an 8-7 lead. Wang stopped Bogdan on three set-point opportunities before she secured the 12-10 win.

No. 3 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan bounced back from a first-set defeat to eliminate Brazil’s Laura Pigossi 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Putintseva won 70 percent of her first-service points (28 of 40).

Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia cruised past sixth seed Shuai Zhang of China 6-1, 6-0 in 49 minutes. Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto beat Czech foe Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

Ladies Open Lausanne

Second seed Belinda Bencic won an all-Swiss battle in front of her home fans, beating Susan Bandecchi 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals in Switzerland.

Bencic, on the hunt for her first career victory in her home nation, won 26 of 32 first-service points (81.3 percent) and smashed four aces.

France’s Caroline Garcia, the sixth seed, swept past countrywoman Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-4. Germany’s Jule Niemeier, a week removed from her quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, beat fellow German Eva Lys 6-4, 6-2, and Olga Danilovic of Serbia beat Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
