The South Carolina Gamecocks found themselves down by four late in their season opener against the 16th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. Three-point underdogs in the game, head coach Will Muschamp and Co. seemed prime to pull off a late-game upset at Williams-Brice Stadium.

That’s when everything went wrong. Tennessee was forced to punt the ball back to South Carolina with just over a minute remaining in the game. The Gamecocks’ offense never saw the ball.

This is just a brutal mistake. How can multiple South Carolina special teams players be so unaware of the situation at hand? As you can see, sophomore defensive back Jammie Robinson was not happy with teammate Cam Smith after the latter touched the ball.

We saw some tremendous football played around the nation on Saturday as the SEC opened its schedule. This definitely wasn’t that. South Carolina finished last season with a 4-8 record after earning bowl appearance in each of Muschamp’s first three years leading the program. It now appears that the Gamecocks are on a downward trajectory.
