MLB now boasts co-leaders for the home run crown one week into the 2020 season. It’s not the names you might expect. Teoscar Hernandez entered Thursday’s action leading the Majors with four homers.

Enter into the equation Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vázquez. Taking on the Steven Matz and the New York Mets Thursday evening in the Big Apple, the backstop did major work early on.

That included a 411-foot homer off Matz in the second inning to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the fourth, Vázquez knocked in Xander Bogaerts with a two-run homer to give the Sox a 3-2 lead.

Boston is going to need this type of production from Vázquez if it is going to make up for the loss of Mookie Betts and contend for a playoff spot in the American League this season.

The 29-year-old catcher hit .276 with 23 homers, 73 RBI and a .798 OPS for Boston last season.
