While there have been a few memorable benches-clearing brawls in MLB over the past few years, none come close to the chaos that took place on Wednesday night in Venezuela when chaos erupted during the game.
The moment came in the 8th inning of a 13-1 game when emotions boiled over into a wild scene. Caribes Anzoátegui pitcher Angel Nesbitt threw at Águilas del Zulia outfielder Alex Romero with the pitch hitting him in the back. Romero then started striking the catcher with his bat, who immediately went after Romero.
Both benches immediately emptied as players came running onto the field in an ugly scene with kicking and multiple things thrown. The fighting then shifted into a massive pile near the stands along the third-base line.
It wasn’t the first time Nesbitt threw behind Romero’s back, but the extreme escalation by Romero should certainly lead to a suspension from the league. Hopefully, everyone avoided any serious injuries and things don’t further escalate between these two teams.
