With a 10-point lead at the nine minute mark in the fourth quarter on Friday night, it appeared as if the Atlanta Hawks were going to win Game 6 against the Washington Wizards going away. This would have sent the Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals without much drama.
Then, Washington found a way to get right back into the game in the ensuing few minutes, pulling to within three with six seconds remaining. After a Wizards timeout to draw up a play, future Hall of Famer Paul Pierce appeared to have sent the game into overtime with a three pointer.
Unfortunately for Pierce and the Wizards, it was deemed that the ball didn’t leave his hand prior to the game clock hitting zero. It was yet another close loss in a series of heartbreaking endings for Washington.
As the officials looked over the replay, fans in Washington grew to understand the magnitude of the situation. The Wizards were going home.
With the win, the top-seeded Hawks advanced through the conference semifinals in six games. They will now take on LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers starting Wednesday night in Atlanta.
