As he was witnessing yet another mass shooting go down, 29-year-old James Shaw Jr. took action into his own hands. Eating at a Waffle House near Nashville, Shaw heard shots ring out loud.
That’s when he hid in the bathroom to escape danger and get a better look at the shooter. Within minutes, Shaw had wrestled the AR-15 from suspect, Travis Reinking, saving countless lives in the process.
Seen as a hero for his act of bravery, Shaw Jr. has been receiving praise the world over. That didn’t change Wednesday morning in an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In fact, Miami Heat superstar and future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade surprised Shaw on the set. It was a pretty awesome scene.

Whatever comes of Shaw’s celebrity pales in comparison to his actions that early Sunday morning back in April. But it’s great to see him being recognized for the hero that is. Meeting his favorite basketball player in Wade must have been a surreal experience for the father of one.
If things aren’t going to change in regards to policy surrounding an American-specific mass shooting epidemic, the first line of defense are the citizens. Wade obviously showed Shaw the respect he deserves for his act of bravery by taking time from his offseason to meet with the young man.
