Just when it seemed like the Kansas Jayhawks might have a chance for a game-winning drive and the the Governor’s Cup, it all came crashing down on an ugly final play — a play that perfectly sums up the Kansas experience the past couple of decades.
Kansas trailed 21-17 with the ball at Kansas State’s 32-yard line and 33 seconds left in the game. On second down, quarterback Peyton Bender dropped back to pass when disaster struck. The football slipped out of his hand at the start of his throw and the Wildcats recovered for the game-sealing turnover.

Kansas was on the verge of snapping a nine-game losing streak to its state rival and finally bringing the Governor’s Cup home back to Lawrence. Instead, Bender’s embarrassing fumble extended Kansas State’s winning streak to 10 games.
The Jayhawks still lead the historical series with a 64-47-5 record since the first meeting in 1902. However, the Wildcats are quickly catching up with a decade of dominance and a generation of young fans that only knows Kansas State as the superior team in the state. As for Kansas, it’s left with another embarrassing moment that perfectly captures the Kansas experience.
