George Springer’s two-out, two-run homer capped a four-run seventh inning and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays rallied past the Baltimore Orioles 11-10 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Teoscar Hernandez doubled against Tyler Wells (2-2) leading off the seventh. Corey Dickerson walked and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a long single to right, scoring Hernandez to make it 10-8. Dickerson scored on Jake Lamb’s sacrifice fly. Danny Jansen flied to left for the second out but Springer lined an 0-1 slider down the line in left for his 17th home run.
Gurriel, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Jansen also homered for Toronto (78-63), which is in a battle for the second AL wild card.
Austin Hays extended his hitting streak to 17 games with two of Baltimore’s four home runs. Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle also homered for the Orioles (46-95), and Pedro Severino had three hits.
Nate Pearson (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings and Jordan Romano worked the seventh for his 17th save.
Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu lasted just 2 1/3 innings, his shortest start of the season, and allowed seven runs on eight hits.
The Orioles took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the first when Trey Mancini doubled and Santander homered to left on the first pitch.
Toronto answered in the second. Hernandez doubled and Gurriel, Jr. homered to left center to tie it.
Severino led off the Baltimore second with a single and Kelvin Gutierrez doubled him to third. Severino scored on a groundout and Hays homered to make it 5-2.
Guerrero’s 43rd home run pulled the Blue Jays within 5-3 in the third, but the Orioles added two in the third. Mancini walked, Santander singled and Severino’s single loaded the bases. Ryan McKenna’s double to left scored two runs and ended Ryu’s afternoon.
Jansen’s two-run home run pulled the Blue Jays within 7-5.
Orioles starter Dean Kremer gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings.
Hays led off the Baltimore fourth with his 18th of the season and Mountcastle followed with his 27th. Severino added an RBI single and the lead was 10-5.
The Blue Jays got two in the fifth. Two walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases for Lamb, whose single scored two runs.
