The Washington Nationals released third baseman Starlin Castro on Thursday at the end of his 30-game suspension following accusations of domestic violence, The Athletic reported.
The move was expected. The Nationals issued a statement on July 30 that said Marlin would be cut once he served his Major League Baseball suspension.
“We take all allegations of abuse and harassment very seriously. We fully support the Commissioner’s decision and will be releasing Starlin Castro upon the completion of his suspension. Per the terms of the policy, we will have no further comment on this matter,” the Nationals said in a statement.
Castro, 31, was placed on administrative leave by MLB on July 16 amid the allegations.
A four-time All-Star, Castro hit .283 with three homers and 38 RBIs in 87 games this season. He signed a two-year, $12 million contract before the start of the 2020 season.
He was suspended by MLB on July 30 following an investigation. Commissioner Rob Manfred found he should face discipline under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy.
Castro was accused of sexual assault in 2011, though charges were not filed.
