Despite it looking very unlikely at this point, Shedeur Sanders seems to still be hoping the New York Giants make him their first-round pick in this month’s NFL Draft.
Heading into the offseason, the Giants had a major problem to address. After moving on from former first-round pick Daniel Jones during the season, the front office was tasked with finding a new starting quarterback for 2025 and hopefully beyond.
That is why the assumption was that the G-Men would use their selection at third overall to take one of this year’s top QB prospects. However, as the scouting process has played out, there are major concerns about using a top-five selection on players like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
Furthermore, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are competing to keep their jobs after this season. So they pivoted to pursuing a veteran QB that can help them compete for a playoff spot in 2025. But instead of getting one, the Giants signed two.
In March, New York inked journeyman Jameis Winston and Seattle Seahawks legend Russell Wilson to free-agent deals. Their signings seem to confirm the Giants will take the best player available at three — probably Sanders’ teammate Travis Hunter — and looking for a rookie QB later in the event. And it would end links to the team using their top pick on Shedeur Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders still hoping to be drafted by New York Giants despite veteran additions?
But it looks like the Colorado star is still holding out hope he gets taken by the team he most wants to play for in the NFL.
In a new video, Sanders is greeted by friends and family at what looks like a backstage green room. He’s asked if he is going to be drafted by the Giants. Sanders laughs and says, “That’s what it is.” When another person jokes they wants to root for him and he can’t if he is in New York, the young star just laughs.
There have been rumblings that the team could still take a QB in Round 1. But it would seem like a waste to use money and a top pick for two players that might be on the bench for long stretches of the season. The Giants are more likely to trade back into the end of Round 1. And if Sanders is still on the board, then he would be a high-value selection at that point.
