The University of Alabama at Birmingham suffered a heartbreaking loss this week, following the tragic loss of football signee Jamari Smith.

Smith, a basketball and football star at Alabama’s Lee High School, signed with UAB in February and was expected to attend practices with the team this summer. On Wednesday afternoon at Lee County lake, Smith drowned.

According to AL.com, Smith was swimming with friends in the lake when he slipped underwater with friends quickly trying to rescue him. Friends quickly called 911 with medics responding quickly, but life-saving measures were not successful.

Our condolences go out to smith’s family, friends and the UAB family during this difficult time.
