Troy Tulowitzki still ‘probably a ways away’ from return

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has cleared the first big hurdle in his road to recovery from surgery on both heels to remove bone spurs.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet, the 33-year-old has now been cleared to run on flat ground for the first time since he underwent surgery in early April to remove bone spurs in both heels.

While it’s a step forward for Tulowitzki, manager John Gibbons indicated the 33-year-old shortstop is “probably still a ways away” from any potential return to the field for game action.

Tulowitzki, who last suited up for Toronto in a regular season game on July 28, 2017, may have to fight for playing time upon his return.

Aledmys Diaz, who started at shortstop for Toronto before he landed on the disabled list, is nearing a return and would likely split time with Tulowitzki.
