Trey Lance social media post seems to suggest hope for trade to Tennessee Titans

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance probably sees the writing on the wall when it comes to his future as the team’s starting signal caller, and it seems he may already have a team in mind for a possible new home.

At the start of the season, it looked like the 49ers saw 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance as their now, and not just the future at QB. Despite reaching the NFC Championship game last year with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo under center, the team decided the 22-year-old was ready to lead the offense and team in 2022.

When he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, it still seemed likely he would have the starting job waiting for him when next season began. However, that has changed rapidly over the last six weeks.

Rookie Brock Purdy has been out of this world in his six starts following a season-ending injury to Garopollo. He has helped lead the struggling offense to become one of the deadliest in the league and had his best game yet in their Wild Card win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Barring a comically bad game in the Divisional Round, Purdy is the likely starter heading into next season and Trey Lance may be looking for his escape from San Francisco.

On Tuesday, the Tennessee Titans made headlines by hiring 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon to be their new general manager. Following the news, Lance took to his Instagram account to post a story about Carthon’s receiving the coveted gig.

In the post, Trey Lance posted a picture of Carthon with no caption other than three fingers-crossed emojis. While the Instagram story could be his unique way of wishing Carthon good luck, it will certainly be taken as something else. That else being a hope he is on the Titans roster next season.

As mentioned above, the 49ers probably view Purdy as their next starter, and if not “Mr. Irrelevant” there have been notable rumors about a pursuit of Tom Brady. The Titans will also be in the Brady hunt because they are in need of a QB with Ryan Tannehill likely to be cut and rookie Malik Willis not impressing in his few starts this season.

  • Trey Lance stats (career): 8 games, 797 passing yards, 5 TD, 3 INT, 235 rushing yards

With the man that helped to evaluate and draft Trey Lance running the show in Tennessee, a move for the former North Dakota State standout would make a lot of sense and be far more feasible than deals to acquire big-name talents like Brady, Derek Carr, or Lamar Jackson.
