Trevor Siemian will start in Week 2 vs. 49ers

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The quarterback competition between Trevor Siemian and Mark Sanchez is getting more interesting by the day. Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak told reporters Thursday that Siemian will get the start on Saturday when the Broncos host the San Francisco 49ers.

He said he “hopes” Mark Sanchez gets time with the first-team offense, per Nicky Jhabvala of the Denver Post. He also said that he would like to make a decision on who will start before Week 3 but doesn’t know if he will.

It’s been reported that rookie Paxton Lynch will play the entire second half, so this appears to be a chance for Siemian to prove he deserves the job. The Broncos already know what they have in Sanchez, who continues to offer a mix of good and bad.

Heading into training camp, Sanchez was said to have a slight lead over Siemian. But word coming out of camp since it started was that last year’s seventh-round pick has a legitimate chance to take the job.

He’ll get his chance to prove his worth against a surprisingly good 49ers pass defense that gave Brock Osweiler and the Houston Texans some trouble in Week 1.
