The Toronto Blue Jays designated right-hander Rafael Dolis for assignment prior to Wednesday’s road game against the Washington Nationals.

Dolis had three saves to go with a hefty 5.63 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 39 relief appearances this season. The 33-year-old experienced a sharp drop-off from a stellar 2020 campaign in which he went 2-2 with five saves and a 1.50 ERA in 24 appearances.

Toronto also recalled infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Buffalo, placed right-hander Alek Manoah on the bereavement list and activated left-hander Tim Mayza (elbow) from the 10-day injured list.

The 25-year-old Smith was batting .286 with 19 homers, 63 RBIs and 16 steals in 82 games at Buffalo.

“He earned it,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters of Smith’s promotion. “Now he has a chance to play in the big leagues. That’s pretty cool for anyone. I told him that I was happy he was here and that he’s going to get a chance to play.”

Manoah, 23, has stood out as a rookie. He is 5-2 with a 3.34 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 62 innings over 12 starts.

The 29-year-old Mayza is 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 44 relief appearances this season. He last pitched for the Blue Jays on Aug. 5.
