Toronto Blue Jays call up infielder Breyvic Valera

The Toronto Blue Jays called up infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Sunday’s doubleheader with the Texas Rangers.

The Jays also optioned outfielder Jonathan Davis to Buffalo and appointed him as the 27th player for Sunday. Toronto also designated left-hander Nick Allgeyer for assignment.

Valera, 29, last appeared in the majors in 2019 with the Blue Jays. He played five games that season for Toronto and collected four hits, one homer and three RBIs.

Valera is a .223 career hitter with one home run and 14 RBIs in 54 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (2017), Los Angeles Dodgers (2018), Baltimore Orioles (2018), New York Yankees (2019) and Blue Jays.

Valera is batting .313 with 11 doubles, three homers and 28 RBIs in 41 games this season at Buffalo.

Davis, 29, is hitting just .143 with one homer and four RBIs in 48 games for Toronto this season.

Allgeyer, 25, made his MLB debut on July 2 and retired all three batters he faced in his only inning of work in an 11-1 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.
