
Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty made a triumphant return to the WTA on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ana Bogdan of Romania in the second round of the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne, Australia.
The Australian needed just 1 hour, 17 minutes to dismiss Bogdan in Barty’s first event since a semifinal loss to Petra Kvitova at Doha in February 2020.
Speaking of Kvitova, the fourth-seeded Czech used a 41-22 edge in winners en route to a 7-6(6), 7-5 victory over Venus Williams.
Also on Tuesday, second-seeded Sofia Kenin advanced after her opponent, Camila Giorgi of Italy, retired following the first set. Sixth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium and 16th-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic posted a 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2 win over Aliona Bolsova of Spain.

Kaia Kanepi of Estonia recorded a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over fourth-seeded Aryna Sabalekna of Belarus in Melbourne.
The upsets didn’t end there, as Katie Boulter of Great Britain posted a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over 14th-seeded Coco Gauff.
Second-seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan, fifth-seeded Johanna Konta of England and 16th-seeded Laura Siegemund of Germany breezed to straight-set victories. Sixth-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland needed to overcome a first-set loss to post a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kaja Juvan of Slovenia.
