Tempers flare at Steelers practice, multiple fights break out

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not in a great situation heading into Week 6. The team finds itself at 1-4 on the season and is down to its third-string quarterback.

It seems that players took frustrations out on themselves during practice on Wednesday. As noted by The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly, multiple fights broke out during the session.

It started with safety Marcus Allen hitting running back James Conner a bit too hard. From there, Kam Kelly popped JuJu Smith-Schuster on the very next play.

“An unusual number of skirmishes broke out during Wednesday’s practice, confirmed by several players afterward in the locker room, as the pissed-off 1-4 Steelers started their week of preparation for a game against the Chargers with a more than just a little extracurricular activity against each other,” the report read.

Several defensive players attempted to downplay the incidents, indicating that it was a physical practice. This represented the first time Pittsburgh players were in full uniforms during practice since prior to the team’s Week 4 outing against the Cincinnati Bengals.

However, those on the offensive side of the ball were none too happy.

“I really don’t want to talk about it, to be honest. I know you want to know what’s going on, but I don’t want to talk about it,” guard David DeCastro said.

It’s not surprising that the Steelers are frustrated. They entered the season with legit division title aspirations.

Once Ben Roethlisberger went down for the season in Week 2, that was thrown completely out the window. It’s now up to Mike Tomlin to keep this team together.
