Report: Tanner Mangum ‘out for at least a month’ with ankle injury, Beau Hoge to start

BYU quarterback Beau Hoge

BYU will be without starting quarterback Tanner Mangum for the foreseeable future as the junior recovers from an ankle injury. In his stead, Beau Hoge, son of former NFL player Merril Hoge, will get the start Saturday as the Cougars host the Wisconsin Badgers.

Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune provided this bit of news on Saturday morning: “Hoge will make his first career start in the place of junior Tanner Mangum, out for at least a month with an ankle injury.”

Perhaps Hoge will provide a spark to a BYU team that has come out of the gate a bit poorly in 2017. Coming into Week 3, the Cougars already sport a 1-2 record, having played in the week before the official “Week 1” start of the season for the rest of the nation’s teams. They have lost their last two games by a combined 33 points to LSU and Utah, and Mangum has contributed to those losses with four interceptions.

Wisconsin’s arrival in Provo likely won’t herald the beginning of a turnaround. But perhaps the offense can begin to take positive steps against a very tough opponent.
