South Carolina quarterback Luke Doty is questionable for the season opener on Sept. 4 after being diagnosed with a sprained foot.
Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer told reporters on Saturday that Doty sustained the injury during Friday’s practice.
Doty met with doctors on Saturday to determine the severity. South Carolina hosts Eastern Illinois in its opener.
“We will re-evaluate him here in a couple weeks,” Beamer said. “Luke is in great spirits and optimistic he will be able to play in the first game. If not, it will be soon after that.”
Doty, a sophomore, started South Carolina’s final two games of the 2020 season and was named the 2021 starter by first-year-coach Beamer during the spring.
Doty saw action in eight games and completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 405 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
