The University of South Carolina’s board of trustees granted preliminary approval Friday to a two-year contract extension for men’s basketball coach Frank Martin.

The amendment to his contract could be finalized later Friday, according to multiple reports, and would keep Martin under contract with the Gamecocks through 2025.

Martin, 55, will be owed $3.2 million in salary for next season and $3.3 million annually in the final three years of the deal, per the reports.

Martin has a 153-134 record through nine seasons at South Carolina, but is coming off the worst record (6-15, 4-12 SEC) of his tenure in 2020-21. Martin battled COVID-19 on two separate occasions during a difficult campaign that included multiple pandemic-related pauses.

The Gamecocks have made only one NCAA Tournament appearance under Martin, reaching the Final Four in 2017.

Since the end of the season, six players on the South Carolina roster have either declared for the 2021 NBA Draft or entered the NCAA transfer portal.
