Sean McVay: Jared Goff extension not on the radar

After leading his Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl appearance this past season, quarterback Jared Goff is now eligible for an extension.

He joins the likes of Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz as young quarterbacks who could potentially be inked to record-breaking long-term deals this offseason.

Unfortunately for Goff, it doesn’t look like that’s on the Rams’ radar. Head coach Sean McVay took to the podium during the annual NFL meeting in Arizona on Tuesday — indicating as much.

This is a rather surprising public stance for the Rams to take. It comes on the heels of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman indicating that he’d like a deal to get done with Wentz before the 2020 season. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have remained open to extending Prescott.

In terms of overall body of work, Goff has had the most team-wide success. Sure Philadelphia earned the Super Bowl title over New England back in February of 2018, but that came with Nick Foles starting under center and earning the game’s MVP. Wentz tore his ACL back in 2017 and is coming off a back injury this past season.

Meanwhile, Prescott has seen a downtick in production since an awe-inspiring rookie performance back in 2016.

For his part, Goff has led the Rams to consecutive NFC West titles and a Super Bowl appearance.

With that said, the young quarterback did struggle during the latter stages of the 2018 season. Postseason included, Goff threw seven touchdowns compared to eight interceptions in his final eight games.

The backdrop here is obvious. Los Angeles added former Jacksonville Jaguars first-round bust Blake Bortles in free agency.

While he’s not expected to compete with Goff for the Rams’ starting job, it does raise questions about what Sean McVay and Co. think of Goff as a long-term solution.

Given that the Rams are unlikely to extend Goff this offseason, that’s magnified even further.
