The San Diego Padres will be without a hard-throwing reliever for the duration of the shortened 2020 MLB season and potentially half of the 2021 campaign.

AJ Cassavell of MLB.com notes that 26-year-old righty Trey Wingenter has undergone Tommy John Surgery.

This is a potentially big blow for San Diego. A 17th-round pick of the Padres back in 2015, Wingenter struck out 71 batters in 51 innings for the Padres last season.

While he did boast an inflated 5.65 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, San Diego was relying on him to be a bridge between the starters and closer Kirby Yates.

This could also be why San Diego acquired veteran reliever Tim Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs in a trade earlier this week.
