The San Diego Padres acquired All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier, who leads Major League Baseball in hits, in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, multiple outlets reported.

The deal, pending medical reviews, comes just five days before MLB’s trading deadline, as San Diego looks to bolster its roster as it competes with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

The Pirates will receive three San Diego players in the deal. Two of them known by Sunday night were infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano and outfield prospect Jake Suwinski, according to reports.

Frazier, 29, has amassed 125 hits in 98 games through Sunday to lead the majors. His .324 batting average was second-best in the NL. Frazier has also hit four home runs, 28 doubles, four triples and 32 RBIs in 2021.

In a six-year career spent entirely with Pittsburgh, Frazier has batted .283 with 39 home runs, 119 doubles and 204 RBIs.

With the Padres, Frazier will join an infield that includes All-Stars Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Eric Cronenworth. Frazier also can play left field.

Owners of the second-worst record in the NL, the Pirates entered selling mode ahead of Friday’s deadline.
