Daniil Medvedev clinched Russia’s first Davis Cup title since 2006 with a 7-6 (7), 6-2 victory Sunday against Croatia’s Marin Cilic in Madrid, Spain.

It is the third title for the Russians (also 2002) and denied the Croatians their third crown (2005, 2018).

Medvedev’s victory gave Russia an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the final following countryman Andrey Rublev’s 6-4, 7-6 (5) defeat of Borna Gojo earlier in the day at Madrid Arena.

Medvedev, ranked No. 2 in the world, struck eight aces and saved the only break point he faced. He finished with 11 winners, 10 unforced errors and converted two of his three break chances.

Rublev, ranked No. 5, withstood 15 aces by Gojo, who saved seven of eight break points. Rublev fired eight aces of his own and never faced a break point, finishing with 18 winners and just four unforced errors.

“It was super tough and I felt a lot of pressure, but it’s good to put my country in the lead,” Rublev told reporters after surviving against Gojo, ranked No. 279 in the world.
