Rockies rumors – Team listening to inquiries on Nolan Arenado

As MLB teams turn their attention to free-agent third baseman Anthony Rendon, the Colorado Rockies could reportedly take advantage of the market and are listening to teams interested in Nolan Arenado.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Rockies have received a lot of calls asking about the All-Star slugger’s availability since the trade deadline. While no one sees a move as likely yet, especially since Arenado has a full no-trade clause, Colorado is listening to ideas from teams.

Arenado excelled once last season, proving himself as one of the best defenders at third base and an MVP-caliber hitter. He posted a .962 OPS with a .315/.379/.583 slash line, 41 home runs and 118 RBI.

The five-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove Award recipient signed an eight-year, $260 million extension with Colorado in February. Arenado also can exercise the player opt-out clause after the 2021 season, allowing him to test free agency before his age-31 season.

The size of the deal, in addition to the no-trade and opt-out clause, lessen the chances of a trade. If the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers, want an elite bat and great defender at third base, though, Arenado is an even better player than Rendon. Of course, Rendon is a free agent, which would only cost money, rather than top prospects and salary.
