Rob Gronkowski on Super Bowl Fight: “Screw it, I’m Throwing Some Haymakers”

Lost in the amazing end to Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night was the brawl that broke out in the final seconds.

Immediately after New England took over and was able to kneel on the ball for the win, Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin was ejected from the game after throwing a punch at Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

During an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night, Gronkowski discussed the fight and what he was thinking at that point (h/t ESPN).

I got pushed or something, and it was the last game of the year, and I was like, ‘Screw it, I’m throwing some haymakers.”

Gronkowski played a major role in the brawl. He also escaped ejection, though it’s likely the All-Pro tight end will receive a fine from the National Football League.

He even addressed that in a sarcastic manner on the show.

I don’t think I did (throw punches). Roger, no, I did not.”

The good news here is that this fight was overshadowed by one of the greatest Super Bowls in recent memory. Otherwise, a drama-filled season would have culminated in yet another black eye for the league.

As it relates to Gronkowski, it’s not a surprise that he disabled his filter when speaking on the late-night television show. As always, the Patriots tight end was a great interview.
