The New England Revolution officially announced the acquisition of decorated veteran Jozy Altidore on Monday.
The two-time U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year has scored nearly 200 goals and played more than 500 matches for club and country.
“We welcome Jozy Altidore to the New England Revolution. Jozy is a player we know well and feel confident that he will be an excellent addition to our team,” Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said. “I believe Jozy can continue to be an outstanding goal scorer, and we will work hard to get him back to full fitness and in good form over the next couple of months.”
The Revs acquired the longtime U.S. men’s national team star after Toronto FC exercised an offseason buyout. New England extended his contract an additional year through 2024, while Toronto remains responsible for a portion of his salary through 2023.
Altidore, 32, spent seven seasons with Toronto (2015-21), where he was an MLS Cup MVP and a two-time All-Star. He played for the New York Red Bulls from 2006-08 and has 77 goals in 176 career MLS appearances.
He also had multiple stops in Europe, including 67 games with Dutch side Alkmaar Zaanstreek (2011-13) and 42 games with Sunderland in England (2013-15).
Internationally, he has earned 115 caps and scored 42 goals for the U.S. men’s national team while appearing in two FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014).
“I am excited to begin this next chapter with the Revolution and look forward to competing for trophies in New England,” Altidore said. “I am grateful for this opportunity to reunite with Bruce Arena and look forward to getting to work with my teammates immediately.”
New England opens the 2022 MLS season at the Portland Timbers on Feb. 26.
