The New York Giants are eager for Victor Cruz’s return to the field, but the team might have to wait a little longer on the wide receiver.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the 28-year-old wideout didn’t practice on Wednesday due to a calf injury, and Graziano suggests that could mean Cruz won’t play until Week 4.
That seems a little outlandish on the surface, but Graziano brings a couple tremendous points to the table: Cruz hasn’t practiced in three weeks, and New York must play three games in 12 days to open the 2015 season.

Considering Cruz’s lack of practice time, it would indeed be shocking if the receiver suits up for Sunday night’s clash with the rival Dallas Cowboys. Then, the Giants host the Atlanta Falcons on Sep. 20 before a quick turnaround on Thursday Night Football against the Washington football team on Sep. 24.
Unless Cruz returns next week in any capacity, the chances of him progressing from limited contact to full-speed, full-contact action between Atlanta and Washington seem particularly low.
For now, New York will lean on second-year sensation Odell Beckham Jr. and 24-year-old wideout Reuben Randle, as well as Preston Parker in the slot and Shane Vereen out of the backfield.
The Giants will be a dangerous team when Cruz is ready to play, but as of now, it might be smart for fans to brace for a longer absence than anticipated.
