The Seattle Seahawks tend to wait until a player has one year remaining on his current contract to even discussion an extension. It’s an issue we saw with soon-to-be former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas in the past.
Entering the final year of his deal, the expectation has been that the Seahawks and franchise quarterback Russell Wilson have been engaged in extension negotiations.
Not so fast.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, there’s been zero contact between the two sides on an extension.
This could potentially make things interesting on the Wilson front moving forward. If no extension is signed this offseason, Seattle would then likely be forced to place the franchise tag on him following the 2019 campaign. It’s not a situation the team would be comfortable with.
This all comes on the heels of suggestions that Wilson’s wife might very well be forcing a trade from Seattle to the New York Giants.
Wilson, 30, is set to earn a base salary of $17 million this coming season with a $25.29 million cap hit.
