As the Minnesota Timberwolves look to make some major roster shakeups this offseason, one of the first steps is trying to move forward Andrew Wiggins. Despite carrying of the worst contracts in the NBA, the Timberwolves are reportedly confident in their ability to move Wiggins this offseason.
According to Mark Gunnels, the Timberwolves believe they will find a trade partner willing to take on the final four years of Wiggins’ five-year, $147.7 million contract.
It will be a very tough task to move Wiggins’ contract without sacrificing potential assets in exchange for offloading the contract. The 24-year-old is owed $27 million next season and will be owed more than $94 million in the final three years of the deal.
Wiggins never seemed to find his place with the Timberwolves last season and likely needs a change of scenery. He averaged 18.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 2018, but shot a career-worst 41.2 percent from the field.
Given Minnesota’s extensive interest in restricted free agent D’Angelo Russell, including a scheduled meeting in the coming days, getting Wiggins’ contract off the books would go a long way in helping the team sign Russell to a max contract.
