Report: Teddy Bridgewater could be Jets starter in Week 1

Jets quarterback Teddy Bridgewater

If Teddy Bridgewater can stay healthy and proves he’s the sharpest tool in the shed for the New York Jets this summer, one report suggests he could be the team’s starter come Week 1.

“My understanding is that Todd Bowles won’t hesitate to start Bridgewater over McCown in the season opener A) if the former Vikings starter looks great in the preseason and B) Darnold clearly isn’t ready,” Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News wrote on Wednesday.

Bridgewater surprised when he not only was able to be a full participant during the team’s first OTAs but that he was the best quarterback during that session. Meanwhile, despite getting much more work than Bridgewater or McCown, rookie Sam Darnold was reportedly shaky in his first real session with the offense.

Now, it’s very early. Far too early to be making predictions. But this is still noteworthy because quite recently Bridgewater was widely reported as being somewhat on the roster bubble heading into the offseason workouts.

Before the young quarterback suffered the catastrophic knee injury that cost him most of two seasons, he was well on track to become one of the league’s most promising young stars.

The Jets could end up having quite the enviable problem on their hands this summer if both he and Darnold shine during the preseason, which would inevitably lead to some interesting conversations about shipping Bridgewater for draft picks.
