Report: Surprise team emerges in the Tua Tagovailoa sweepstakes

Tua Tagovailoa, Raiders

There is no player making more waves ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft than Tua Tagovailoa, who has the rumor mill buzzing just hours ahead of the first round.

There’s no consensus about where he may land. As we detailed a couple weeks back, Tagovailoa could be a top-10 pick, or he could experience an Aaron Rodgers-esque draft-day slide.

As the rumor mill continues to churn, a surprise team has emerged as a potential suitor for the former Alabama Crimson Tide star. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Thursday that talk the Jacksonville Jaguars may be interested in taking Tagovailoa has “gathered steam in recent days.”

This would be a crazy development, to be sure. Not the least of which because the Jaguars have thrown public support behind last year’s sixth-round pick, Gardner Minshew. Part of that support came in the form of Jacksonville trading away veteran Nick Foles, who got a huge contract in free agency just a year ago.

Then there’s the whole notion that one of the big reasons the Jaguars have been trying to trade Leonard Fournette is because he made it known he wants former MVP Cam Newton to join him in Jacksonville. Head coach Doug Marrone made it clear that Fournette’s comments could be a problem in the locker room.

So, if that’s really true, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Jaguars to expend a high draft pick on Tagovailoa, whose injury history has reportedly led to multiple teams dropping him from their draft boards altogether.

Just another reminder that it’s officially lying season in the NFL. We’ll find out soon enough what’s what. Get your popcorn ready!
