Report: ‘Strong belief’ Jay Cutler will not play in 2017

Jay Cutler

There are surely some veteran quarterbacks out on the free agent market watching their options dwindle big time. That will be taken to a whole new level once next month’s NFL draft is conducted.

One of the most-experienced veterans remaining on the market may in fact not play in 2017. According to Chicago Bears insider Adam Hoge, there’s a strong belief around the NFL that Jay Cutler will sit the 2017 campaign out.

Despite putting up a horrendous three-year stretch to end his career in Chicago, Cutler wants an opportunity to start. Unfortunately, said opportunities look minimal for him.

The New York Jets added their own veteran in Josh McCown earlier this month. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers and his own Bears team have picked up what have to be considered short-term options.

With the Denver Broncos looking to stay in-house at quarterback, that leaves the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns as the most-viable options for Cutler.

Should things not change here, Cutler will likely be forced to either take a backup role or sit the entire 2017 season out. The 33-year-old quarterback has put up 53 touchdowns and 34 interceptions en route to winning just 12 of 35 starts over the past three seasons.
