The New Orleans Saints had a crew of running backs in for workouts on Wednesday, including Terrance West and Jamaal Charles.
After running the backs through drills and physicals, the Saints have reportedly opted to sign West, rather than Charles, according to Herbie Teope of NFL.com.
Teope added that, “According to a source, Charles had a ‘very good workout and visit’ with the Saints and passed his physical, but at the moment a signing didn’t make sense for either side. This could be revisited at a later time, I’m told.”
Charles of course played with the Denver Broncos last year but didn’t carve out a big role with that offense. He would finish the year with just 425 yards and one touchdown from scrimmage.
West has spent the past two-plus seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. A calf injury kept him out of all but five games a year ago. During his tenure with Baltimore, he appeared in 27 games, started 17 games, rushing for 1,097 yards with seven touchdowns at a 3.9 yards-per-carry clip.
The Saints are adding a back due to the fact that Mark Ingram will be suspended the first four games of the coming season for failing a test for PEDs.
