Report: Saints making ‘strongest push’ for Anquan Boldin

By Vincent Frank

Free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin has not drawn a ton of interest on the open market since the San Francisco 49ers made it known they weren’t interested in retaining him.

Now, less than a month until training camps open around the NFL, one team is reportedly showing the most interest in the 35-year-old receiver.

The 13-year vet had a down season in San Francisco, catching 69 passes for 789 yards and four scores in 2015.

While some of that had to do with the team’s inept coaching staff and equally bad quarterback situation, it was readily apparent that Boldin himself slowed down a great deal from previous seasons.

Still, there’s a lot to like here.

Boldin fits the bill of that big-bodied possession receiver the Saints are now without after releasing Marques Colston during the spring.

He’d also be a nice complement to the team’s young receiver group, headed by the up-and-coming Brandin Cooks.

As Ian Rapoport reported, there is some connection between the Saints and Boldin. The veteran is a big fan of New Orleans wide receivers coach John Morton, who served in the same capacity in San Francisco from 2011-14.

Adding someone of Boldin’s ilk would be huge for Drew Brees. Not only would it gives him that possession receiver, Brees would also have a veteran pass catcher to rely on.
