Report: Rex Ryan to Interview with 49ers and Falcons

Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will be a busy man during the first week of the new year. According to a report from Brian Costello of the New York Post, Ryan will interview for the head coaching vacancies with both the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons.

The most intriguing aspect of this news is San Francisco, who already has two potential in-house replacements for Jim Harbaugh on the defensive side of the ball in Jim Tomsula and Vic Fangio.

It’s also an intriguing fit considering that Harbaugh departed San Francisco mainly due to a spat with a front office, led by CEO Jed York, that seemed to be more hands-on than the former 49ers coach would have liked.

As we know, Ryan is a personality wrapped up inside an ego the size of the Pacific Ocean. That would most definitely make for an interesting match. It’s also a match that could very well help San Francisco overcome the loss of Harbaugh.

As it relates to the Falcons, they are casting a wide net here. Candidates on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball have been mentioned as possibilities to replace Mike Smith, who was fired after a disastrous 2014 season.
