Report: Multiple teams interested in 49ers’ Mike McDaniel for OC job

Despite another losing season in Northern California, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remains one of the most-respected young coaches in the NFL.

Having to deal with undrafted starters at quarterback and running back, Shanahan’s offense surprised a ton of skeptics after both Jimmy Garoppolo and Jerick McKinnon went down to season-ending injuries.

Among the biggest surprises was San Francisco’s success on the ground. Relying on the likes of unproven ball-carriers Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson, the 49ers averaged a robust 4.5 yards per attempt.

It now looks like other teams have taken notice. According to this report from ESPN’s Andrew Hawkins, multiple teams are showing interest in 49ers run game coordinator Mike McDaniel for their offensive coordinator openings.

A longtime assistant under Shanahan, McDaniel previously worked with the 49ers’ head coach in Cleveland, Washington and Atlanta. He started his career as a coaching intern for Shanahan’s father, Mike, with the Broncos back in 2005.

McDaniels’ success with a whole plethora of running backs makes him an under-the-radar OC candidate. That includes 1,000-yard rushers Alfred Morris, Steve Slaton and Devonta Freeman.

49ers’ second-year undrafted back Matt Breida gained 1,075 total yards at a clip of 6.0 yards per tough this past season.

Among those still looking for an offensive coordinator, the Jacksonville Jaguars could certainly make sense here.

For the 49ers, it would be a pretty big loss.
