Report: Junior Galette out for season with torn Achilles

Washington Redskins outside linebacker Junior Galette reportedly will miss the entire 2016 season with a torn Achilles tendon.

It is the second year in a row in which Galette has been lost for the season due to an Achilles tear.

This is a big blow, not only to Galette but also to Washington. He was slated as the starting outside linebacker on the strong side, and there isn’t a ton of depth behind him at the position.

With Galette out of commission, this could mean a bigger role is in store for second-year linebacker Preston Smith, who came on strong last year with six sacks in his final four games. A talented physical specimen, Smith appears to be headed in the right direction from a mental standpoint as well.

“Even three months [ago], he was here,” said defensive coordinator Joe Barry, per Rich Tandler of realredskins.com. “He was working, he was grinding, he changed his body, and he changed his mindset on the way he’s approaching everything.”

Galette’s injury could mean the organization is in the market for some additional help at the outside linebacker position. Rookie Su’a Cravens is likely too light to play outside on the edge and has been playing inside this spring.
