Report: Johnny Manziel drawing interest, but teams waiting on NFL discipline

By Jesse Reed

Johnny Manziel, remarkably, is still an interesting prospect for some NFL teams, but it could be a while before any quarterback-needy franchise comes calling.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed Manziel’s agent Drew Rosenhaus’ claims that teams are, indeed, interested in the troubled third-year passer.

However, he also notes teams are waiting for the NFL to hand down its discipline on Manziel, which could mean an extended waiting period for both sides. The NFL is waiting for the grand jury to deliver its verdict on his pending domestic assault case and then to speak with the alleged victim, Colleen Crowley.

Because nobody knows what will transpire between now and then — with the “then” being perhaps months into the future — nobody wants to take a gamble on Manziel.

From an outsider’s perspective, it might seem strange that any team would be interested in Manziel, who i still partying it up in the midst of his legal and potential criminal probe.

That teams are interested speaks to a big issue in the NFL, which is the unsettling lack of quarterback talent. There just aren’t that many top-notch quarterbacks out there any more. Teams that have one usually don’t have any safety net in case of injury, and teams are desperate for anyone who could potentially make the grade.
